Active yeast and inactive yeast: what actually differs

Both are Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Only one is expected to ferment. On a PANGOO technical data sheet the difference is recorded in a single field, and that field decides how a product is stored, specified and used.

One organism, two jobs

Yeast reaches an animal feed or a food formulation in one of two states. A viable product is supplied so that the cells are still alive when they arrive — it is dosed by viable count and stored so that count survives. A non-viable product has been processed so that the cells can no longer ferment, and is used as an ingredient instead: a source of protein, B-vitamins, nucleotides, cell-wall polysaccharides or flavour precursors.
Most of the PANGOO range is the second kind. That is why the brand is described as an inactive yeast range, and why the products are documented as inactive, deactivated, processed or inactivated rather than by a viable count.

The status field on a technical data sheet

Every feed-grade data sheet in the 2026 pack opens with a product identification table whose third field is a status. Across the sixteen feed-grade products only one reads active:

The one viable product in the feed range

LiveYeast™ Active Dry Yeast is the exception. Its declared technical profile gives a viable yeast count of ≥ 1.0 × 10¹⁰ CFU/g on a release basis, moisture ≤ 8.0%, ash ≤ 4.0%, in fine micro-granules, intended for dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep and goat diets at a typical inclusion of 1–3 kg/MT.
The handling wording also changes for a viable product. Where the inactive products say to keep the material cool, dry and out of sunlight, LiveYeast™ adds the reason: protect from heat, moisture and direct sunlight to preserve viability. Its shelf life is stated as 18 months in unopened original packaging, against 24 months for BrewPro™.

The status terms are not interchangeable

Inactive, deactivated, inactivated, processed, autolyzed and postbiotic are not synonyms on these data sheets — each reflects how that product is produced, and the mechanism is stated where it matters. AutoRich™ Autolyzed Yeast is listed as autolyzed because controlled autolysis releases intracellular nutrients, which is why its profile carries 20.0% small peptides and 8.0% amino nitrogen. ProYeasture™ is listed as a postbiotic because the product is built on yeast fermentation metabolites rather than on whole cells.
If a specification simply says “yeast”, it has not said which of these it is buying. The status field and the product type together are what make a specification unambiguous.

Why the distinction is commercial, not academic

A viable product carries requirements a non-viable one does not: the count has to survive transport and storage, so temperature, humidity and packaging matter more, and the shelf life is typically shorter. A non-viable product is specified and evaluated on composition — protein, moisture, ash, nucleotide content, cell-wall fraction percentages — and is correspondingly more tolerant in storage.
Practical consequence: an enquiry that asks for “active yeast” when the application is protein or palatability support will be answered with the wrong family of products. Naming the function and the state gets a faster and more accurate answer.

What to put in an enquiry

Four things remove almost all of the back-and-forth:
• Target species or application, so the inclusion guide can be matched
• Whether the cells need to be viable, or whether the product is used for its composition
• The property being bought — protein level, nucleotide content, MOS or beta-glucan percentage, selenium content, palatability
• Destination market, because permitted use and labelling requirements are market-specific
